Jerusalem. Without doubt, the most revered holy city in the world.

With a history stretching back almost 5,000 years, it has been at the epicentre of three of the world’s major religions, with Jews, Christians, and Muslims each laying claim to the holy city.

This has, perhaps unsurprisingly, resulted in Jerusalem being one of the most disputed and fought-over places anywhere in the world. The city has been the prized possession of empires, kingdoms, and religious movements over the centuries, leading to it changing hands no fewer than 40 times.

The repercussions which have been generated from these long-standing grievances continue to leave their mark on Jerusalem well into the 21st century. But how did this city, which began as little more than a settlement around a water spring, become one of the most religiously and politically contentious places on earth?

This is how Jerusalem became the world's holiest city.
